Why you’ll love this recipe
- Tastes like apple pie: Similar to my Healthy Apple Pie Bars, this oatmeal really tastes like apple pie.
- Healthy and filling: With 10 grams of fibre and 7 grams of protein per serving, this oatmeal will keep you satisfied all morning long.
- Easy to make: Made on the stovetop in just one pot, with simple ingredients you probably already have at home.
- Perfect for Fall mornings: This oatmeal is warm, cozy and comforting making it the perfect breakfast for Fall mornings.
Key Ingredients

- Oats: For this recipe, you can either use quick oats or rolled oats, either will work!
- Almond milk: You can substitute almond milk for any type of milk you like, or just use water. Milk will give a creamier end result. I like to use a mix of both.
- Apples: Any type of apples you like will work in this recipe. Apples like granny smith apples will hold a firmer texture in the oatmeal, while softer varieties of apples like macintosh will have a softer texture. Use any leftover apples to make a batch of Apple Chia Pudding.

Step 4: Add the oats, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt and mix everything together to combine.

Step 5: Cook the apple oatmeal on medium heat for 3-5 minutes

How To Store and Reheat
Store leftover oatmeal in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. Reheat on the stovetop or in the microwave. If the oatmeal is too thick add a splash of milk or water to bring back the creamy texture.
Jess’s Tips
- Use rolled or quick oats: Both work well, but rolled oats give a heartier texture while quick oats cook faster and come out softer. Avoid steel-cut oats since they won’t cook properly with this method.
- Cook the apples first: Let the apples soften in the liquid before adding the oats so you don’t end up with crunchy pieces in your oatmeal.
- Stir often: Give the pot a stir every minute or two while it cooks to prevent sticking and to keep the oatmeal creamy.
- Adjust the texture: If it’s too thick, add a splash more milk or water. If it’s too thin, let it cook a couple more minutes.
- Add toppings: The cinnamon apples are delicious, but extras like chopped nuts, raisins, nut butter, maple syrup or Apple Granola make it even better.
Frequently Asked Questions
Steel-cut oats take longer to cook than quick or rolled oats, so if you prefer to use steel-cut oats follow the cooking method I use for these Banana Steel Cut Oats.
Apple oatmeal can be made in the microwave by adding all the oatmeal ingredients to a large bowl and microwaving for 2-4 minutes in intervals. It’s important to use a large bowl when microwaving oatmeal so it doesn’t overflow.
Yes! Serve with a scoop of Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, or mix in a scoop of protein powder like I add to these Protein Overnight Oats.

So perfect for cold mornings! It’s so filling and really tastes like Apple Pie!
I use applesauce instead of cooking up apples. I also use ½ apple juice, ½ milk or water for my liquid. Add a bit of vanilla extract and brown sugar too
Happy you enjoyed it!
