If you follow me on Instagram, you know smoothies are kind of my thing. I’ve been making and sharing them online for over 10 years, and this Dragon Fruit Smoothie is one of my personal tropical faves along with my Pina Colada Smoothie and Acai Smoothie. It’s made with just a few simple ingredients but it looks and tastes like a smoothie you’d get at a smoothie bar.
What makes this smoothie stand out? It’s totally banana-optional (just replace the banana with more mango) and the combo of dragon fruit and mango with a squeeze of lime gives it a refreshing twist. Plus, it’s naturally dairy-free and can be made in under 5 minutes!
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- Just 5 ingredients: You only need a handful of ingredients to make this vibrant, flavour-packed smoothie. Also try this Papaya Banana Smoothie for another easy tropical smoothie!
- So pretty: The bright pink colour makes it feel extra special and totally barbie-approved!
- Ready in 5 minutes: making it perfect for busy mornings, or an easy snack.
Key Ingredients

- Pink dragon fruit (pitaya): you can use fresh, frozen or powdered dragon fruit. The dragon fruit doesn’t actually add that much flavour to the smoothie, but adds a beautiful colour.
- Mango: Frozen mangos will make the smoothie extra thick and creamy. You can also buy fresh mangos and freeze them for even better flavour. Use any leftover mangos to make a batch of this Mango Chia Pudding or some Strawberry Mango Popsicles.
- Banana: this gives a great creamy texture to the smoothie. If you don’t like banana you can just use mango.

Recipe Variations
- Add protein: Blend in a scoop of vanilla or unflavoured protein powder like I add to this Berry Protein Smoothie and Green Protein Smoothie, or add some Greek yogurt or cottage cheese.
- Use different fruit: Swap the mango for pineapple or papaya for a different tropical twist.
- Make it a smoothie bowl: Use less liquid to keep the smoothie thick like I do for this Strawberry Smoothie Bowl, and top it with Peanut Butter Granola, or coconut flakes.
- Turn it into a popsicle: Pour the blended smoothie into popsicle moulds and freeze for a healthy frozen treat similar to these Tropical Chia Popsicles!
- Boost with extras: Add chia seeds, flaxseeds, hemp seeds, nut butters or any other mix-ins you love.
How to make a Dragon Fruit Smoothie

Step 1: Add all the smoothie ingredients to a high-speed blender, starting with the liquids, any fresh ingredients and then frozen ingredients for easy blending.

Step 2: Blend until smooth and creamy. It’s best to start your blender on low and then set it on high for about 30 seconds to blend everything together.

Step 3: Pour the smoothie in a large glass and enjoy!
Jess’s Tips
- Use frozen fruit for the best texture: Frozen dragon fruit, mango, and banana will give you that thick, creamy, smoothie shop texture. If using fresh fruit, add a handful of ice.
- Layer ingredients in the right order: Start by adding liquids to the bottom of the blender, then fresh ingredients and mix-ins like protein powder or nut butter, and frozen fruit on top. This helps everything blend smoothly without overworking your blender.
- Add liquid slowly: Start with 1/2 cup of coconut milk and only add more if needed to help it blend. This keeps your smoothie thick and spoonable.
- Blend on high speed: If your blender struggles, pause and scrape down the sides or use a tamper. You can also let the frozen fruit sit out for 2–3 minutes to soften slightly before blending.
- Customize it: Top it off with coconut flakes, hemp seeds, or your favourite granola like this maple pecan granola if you want to turn it into a satisfying breakfast or snack.
- No high-speed blender? No problem: A food processor works great too! Just scrape down the sides as needed.
Frequently Asked Questions
You can find fresh pink dragon fruit fresh usually at Asian grocery stores, frozen at health food stores or online, or as freeze-dried powder (often labelled as pitaya powder). Any of these options will work for making this dragon fruit smoothie. I use frozen dragonfruit that you can order from Pitaya Foods in the USA and from Nature Sante in Canada.
Pink dragon fruit has a mildly sweet taste, similar to a blend of kiwi and pear. It’s subtle but refreshing and has a beautiful pink colour that makes it great to blend into a smoothie.
Yes, but the colour will be much paler and the flavour slightly less sweet. Pink dragon fruit is ideal for that vibrant colour and bolder flavour.
