Key Ingredients

ingredients for matcha chia pudding
  • Chia Seeds: You can use either black or white chia seeds, besides being different in colour they are the same. Chia Pudding is one of my favourite ways to use chia seeds!
  • Matcha Powder: Ceremonial grade matcha which will give a slightly smoother and sweeter taste, while cooking grade matcha will be more earthy. Both work well in this recipe. Both these types of matcha are also great to make Matcha Energy Balls.
  • Milk: I recommend full-fat coconut milk (from a can) to give the chia pudding a rich and creamy base. This is the same base I use for my Coconut Chia Pudding. For a lighter version, you can use light coconut milk or milk half coconut milk with half almond milk (or another type of plant-based milk.)

Jess’s Tips

  • Choose the right matcha: Use ceremonial-grade matcha for a sweeter, more delicate flavour or cooking-grade matcha for a stronger, earthier taste. If you love matcha you’ll also love this Matcha Oatmeal!
  • Whisk thoroughly: Whisk the chia pudding then let it sit 5 minutes and whisk again. This will help prevent any clumps.
  • Choose creamy milk: Use for full-fat coconut milk for a rich and creamy chia pudding. If you prefer a lower fat version use light coconut milk, or half coconut milk and half almond milk.
  • Adjust sweetness to taste: Add more maple syrup or your preferred sweetener if you like your pudding on the sweeter side.
  • Add toppings: Top with fresh berries, granola, or shredded coconut. It would also be delicious mixed with a batch of Mango Chia Pudding to turn it into mango matcha chia pudding!
  • Make a bigger batch: Double the recipe to meal prep for the week. you’ll thank yourself later! 😉

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a different type of milk to make matcha chia pudding?

Absolutely! Almond, oat, or cashew milk can be substituted for coconut milk. But coconut milk will give the creamiest result.

Can I make matcha chia pudding without ceremonial-grade matcha?

Yes. You can use culinary-grade matcha, but it may have a stronger and slightly bitter flavour.

Can I freeze matcha chia pudding?

Technically yes, however I find it results in a slightly grittier texture after defrosting.

Hi! Can’t wait to make this! Quick question – what are you using for the vegan yogurt on top? It looks so thick and creamy and all the vegan yogurts I’ve had are runnier than that.

Hi Molly, i don’t remember which brand I used, sorry!

This sounds like the ultimate creamy matcha chia seed pudding! I make a matcha chia seed pudding but I don’t include coconut milk or cream. I bet this takes the creaminess to the next level!
